Our History


British American was founded in Nassau, Bahamas.


British American Insurance Co. Ltd started a branch in Hotel Merlin, Kuala Lumpur and later established their first office in Bangunan Lee Yan Lian, Jalan Tun Perak, Kuala Lumpur with a staff of six.


The company was localized and British American Insurance Company (M) Sdn Bhd was incorporated to ensure local participation in foreign owned company.


The Company became public and changed its name to British American (M) Insurance Bhd with a paid –up capital of M$10 million. Bangunan British American located at Damanasara Heights, Kuala Lumpur was completed.


British American was listed on KLSE.


Acquired a general insurance company “Traders & Merchants Insurance Sdn Bhd”.


The Company became officially known as British American Life and General Insurance Berhad.


John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston, U.S.A. bought over 30% of British American shares. This marked the beginning of British American’s association with John Hancock.


Name was changed to British American Life Insurance Berhad as the Company ceased writing general insurance in 1991.


Name changed to John Hancock Life Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad.


Canada-based Manulife Financial Corporation merged with US-based John Hancock Financial Services creating a leading global insurance franchise that resulted in Manulife’s entry into Malaysia.


Name changed to Manulife Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad.


Manulife Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad underwent a restructuring exercise and effective 1st October 2008, Manulife Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad became Manulife Holdings Berhad. Subsidiaries companies under Manulife Holdings Berhad are Manulife Insurance Berhad, Manulife Unit Trusts Berhad and Manulife Asset Management (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.


Manulife Holdings Berhad’s subsidiary companies, Manulife Unit Trusts Berhad (MUTB) and Manulife Asset Management (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (MAMM) were merged to strengthen its presence in the wealth management industry. The merger resulted in MUTB changing its name to Manulife Asset Management Services Berhad (MAMSB) with effect on 2 July 2012.
